SPEAKER 1: Lesley Abell

TELEGRAPH TODD AND THE TIME BALL

Lesley Abell will tell the little known story of the landmark Semaphore Time Ball, explaining the significance of the Time Ball for nineteenth century shipping and navigation and the role of Sir Charles Todd (1826-1910), Observer and Superintendent of Telegraphs, in its design. She will draw some comparisons with time balls in other parts of Australia and overseas.

SPEAKER 2: Ian Schomburgk

SPAIN'S RIO TINTO MINES: ANCIENT AND MODERN

These mines date from about 1000 BCE; the Romans left behind between 5 and 20 million tons of slag from their subsequent copper workings. Then after a long period of inactivity a British/German consortium in 1873 brought major re-development. The mines' history and technological changes will be illustrated by Ian's photographs from the museum and a railway trip through the old workings.
