Early 19th Century Ophthalmoscope

This apparatus is on loan to the society with the kind permission of Dr. Belinda Coyte.

Weight: 70 g. Length: 20 cm.

Early Ophthalmoscopes were made by artisans, their function was to view the chambers of the eye and in particular the retina. Unfortunately at this time small appropriate batteries were not available, and the illumination was provided by concave mirrors similar to those used by ENT surgeons. A set of rotating lenses were used to correct for refractive errors of the patient. An ivory handle could be attached .
